After a commission carried out an inspection visit to the Simón Bolívar bridge, the Atlantic Society of Engineers assured that it is still not possible to determine with certainty the causes of the collapse of a section of said structure.

He also maintained that it is very “premature” to provide a diagnosis in relation to the current state of the bridge, which is located at the intersection of National Route 2516 with Circunvalar Avenue.

“The pertinent pathology, geotechnical and hydraulic studies must be carried out,” stated the regional of the Colombian Society of Engineers (SCI), which is led by Néstor Escorcia.

In that sense, the Atlantic Society of Engineers stressed that “when a structure collapses, it does so for the sum of several reasons; it is necessary to analyze the variables that could influence, or aggravate the causes of this collapse.”

He noted that, during the inspection, several aspects were found that are the subject of investigation, including a break in a sewage pipe. That is why he emphasized that “it is important to know the state of the concrete structure, the geotechnical part and the drainage of the bridge.”

The association added that it has been carrying out a series of preliminary inspections, as well as having remained in contact with the national authorities with jurisdiction over the bridge, “in order to carry out the studies from the local level and be able to determine the causes and current state of the structures.” and determine pertinent recommendations.”
