Nicaraguan Parliament authorized the entry of troops from Russia, the United States, Cuba and Venezuela

The National Assembly of Nicaragua authorized this Tuesday the entry into that country of troops, ships and planes of the Russian Armed Forces between June 1 to December 31, 2024, as well as Cuba, the United States and Venezuela.

The Nicaraguan Parliament, under the control of the ruling party, urgently ratified a decree of the Sandinista president, Daniel Ortega ally of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, through which he allows the entry of an unspecified number of foreign military personnel to Nicaragua, as well as ships and aircraft.

The purpose of this measure is “exchange and humanitarian assistance for mutual benefit, in case of emergency situations,” during the second half of 2024, according to the presidential decree.

The Russian military presence in Nicaragua will be to participate in “training and exchange exercises in humanitarian aid operations, search, rescue and rescue missions in emergency situations or natural disasters” with the Humanitarian and Rescue Unit, as well as with the forces land forces, Air Force and Naval Force of the Nicaraguan Army.

Also to carry out exchange of experiences, training, operations against illicit activities in maritime spaces in the Caribbean Sea and jurisdictional waters in the Pacific Ocean of Nicaragua with the Nicaraguan Naval Force.

In addition, President Ortega facilitated the entry of Russian troops into Nicaragua to participate with members of the Special Operations Command, the elite force of the Nicaraguan Army, “in an exchange of experiences and a training exercise in humanitarian aid operations.”

Likewise, Russian troops will participate in the exchange of experiences and operational communication in tasks of confrontation and fight against drug trafficking and transnational organized crime, and training in security tasks, planning of humanitarian aid exercises and response to disasters.

In total, Parliament authorized Ortega for an unestablished number of Russian soldiers, ships and planes to enter Nicaragua from June 1 to December 31, 2024.

Also from Mexico and Central American countries

In the same decree, ratified by Parliament, the president authorized for six months, starting June 1, the entry into the national territory of personnel, ships and aircraft from Mexico to participate in exercises for humanitarian purposes, training, instruction and exchange. of experiences with members of the Nicaraguan Army.

Also from Venezuelan soldiers to participate in exchange and training in security work, planning humanitarian aid exercises and disaster response; training in operations against illegal activities in maritime spaces in the Caribbean Sea and jurisdictional waters in the Pacific Ocean of Nicaragua: and in humanitarian aid operations.

He also gave the green light to the entry of soldiers from Cuba and Central American countries to carry out exchanges and humanitarian work.

In the case of the United States, Ortega gave his approval for “the entry into the national territory, previously planned and coordinated with the Nicaraguan Army, of personnel from the Armed Forces, ships and aircraft of the United States, in order to dock at ports and land at national airports to carry out humanitarian aid operations and search, rescue and rescue missions in emergency situations or natural disasters, by air, sea and land.”

Ortega sent that decree to Parliament, where the ruling party has an absolute majority, for its due ratification, on May 31.EFE
