After investigation, monitoring and coordinated work between the Bogotá Security Secretariat, the Police and the Prosecutor’s Office, they captured five criminals accused of stealing 300 meters of copper cable that contained 1,200 company lines.

Dressed in clothing alluding to the company, the gang affected the optical fiber that was in the pipeline, leaving around 400 home and business customers in the neighborhoods of San Cristóbal and Toberín, north of the capital, without internet, damage that company is already repairing.

The operation, which ended in the early hours of Wednesday, June 4, revealed that outsiders apparently infiltrated one of ETB’s allies in order to commit the crime.

“At ETB we have been working with the authorities to mitigate crime and be able to guarantee our clients the continuity of the service despite the theft. We have multiplied our operational capacity by four to meet the demands of the service, we have implemented a security system in our covers, we are migrating our copper operation and this year we hope to close with all our clients in fiber optics,” said Alex Blanco, president .

According to data from the Ministry of Security, so far this year more than 3,800 complaints have been registered, 916 people captured (11% repeat offenders), 37 gangs dismantled and the closure of 10 scrap yards that sold this stolen material.
