‘The Bridgertons’: that Penelope is a star

On the latest red carpets, the fashion game is to find out which stars have had Ozempic punctures. Stars and stars, you just have to see Jesse Plemons consumed alive. And there’s a lot of talk about diversity and non-normative bodies, but more and less people have succumbed to the aesthetic tyranny of thinness and the canon of angular features and a wasp waist. Logical, on the other hand, if we take into account that actresses who do not respond to the type (great guy) required are relegated to the role of the protagonist’s best friend or that of the class list. And a performer also has to get tired of her talent only being deployed in one direction.

Therefore, it is appreciated that in this new installment of ‘The Bridgertons’ divided into two parts (the first four chapters are now available on Netflix, the next four will arrive on June 13), Penelope Featherington has not had to lose weight to achieve a boyfriend, which is what happens in the original book. And, above all, it is appreciated that Nicola Coughlan is the one starring this season. Because the talent of the Irishwoman, which she showed very well in ‘Derry Girls’, is immeasurable. As Mariona Terés said in ‘Paquita Salas’ while she was left in her panties and bra, “this fat whore is a star.” Teres is. Also Coughlan.

The series, despite Coughlan’s leading role, remains cheesy and syrupy, so much so that it is not suitable for diabetics. But the good thing about ‘The Bridgertons’ is that it doesn’t want to be more than what it is, and it gives its followers everything they like: a structure built around a central romance surrounded by other romances that come and go, repressed desires. (or liberated, depending on the character), a bit of soft eroticism, dance numbers to the rhythm of adaptations of current themes, luxury, sighs, gossip and Queen Charlotte’s crazy wigs.

More entertaining

To that we must add that, fortunately, this new season is much more entertaining than the previous one, focused on the sleepy love affair between Anthony and Kate. It begins with a long-suffering Penelope who not only endures the punishment of being rejected by Eloise Bridgerton since she discovered that she is Lady Whisteldown, but she has also ended up giving up on the love she feels for Colin (Luke Newton) being reciprocated.

Disillusioned, she decides to take the reins of her life, which at that time is equivalent to leaving the reins in the hands of a husband, and, ready to find him, she abandons the strident colors of her mother and her sisters, opting for the very flattering green for redheads and jumps headlong into the marriage market. But, insecure and shy as she is, she needs a hand.

And there is her friend Colin Bridgerton ready to give her some classes on how to seduce a man, and things work to the point that Lord Debling (Sam Phillips), a wealthy naturalist who likes to walk through the countryside and watch birds, He makes her a marriage proposal. But, in the meantime, Colin discovers (oh, surprise!) that he is in love with Penelope, which leads to a steamy carriage scene that has fans of the series going crazy.

Will love definitively triumph between old friends? Will Colin discover that his love is Lady Whisteldown? Will Penelope and Eloise be friends again? We will have to wait for the second part of this latest installment for questions of such substance to be resolved. What without living.
