The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the province of San Juan, through the UFI Computer Crimes and Scams, has issued an alert to the community about a rapidly growing type of scam. In recent days, numerous complaints have been received in which victims try to access home banking, in this case ICBC Bank, although it can be any banking entity, through a search engine such as Google or through advertisements on social networks with alleged direct links to the bank.

According to the statement released by the Prosecutor’s Office, the victims are directed to false pages that appear to be the original ones of the bank, where they enter their credentials and the token, which remain in the possession of cybercriminals, who immediately have the funds.

Below are the advice issued by the MPF

  • Never send personal or banking information: Under no circumstances will any bank or legitimate organization request information such as password, username, token or photo of the DNI. They will not send emails to change passwords either.
  • Always access the Bank through its legitimate website: It is important to directly enter the bank’s address in the browser and save it in the favorites bar, avoiding access from search engines such as Google or social network links.
  • Verify the authenticity of senders: In the case of profiles on social networks, it is crucial to verify that they are verified with a blue check mark, which shows that they have gone through an authentication process and are legitimate profiles. Fake profiles usually have few followers and recent posts.
  • Do not respond to emails, phone calls or messages about alleged errors in bank transfers: nor follow instructions to go to an ATM or enter home banking while talking to someone.
  • If in doubt, hang up the call and contact the bank directly: It is important to look for the contact numbers on the bank’s official website.
  • Download and install applications only from official sites if using cell phone: This is essential to avoid the installation of fraudulent applications.

It should be noted that it is important that the community is alert and takes the necessary measures to protect itself from these types of scams that are on the rise. This information is of utmost importance to prevent possible fraud and protect the financial assets of San Juan residents.
