Theatrical work that offers powerful multicultural reflection on migration, identity and territory will be presented at the Valparaíso Cultural Park

Given the urgent need to meditate on the migratory crisis that impacts realities worldwide, the Cultural Group “Teatro en Casa” together with the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, arrives at the Theater of the Cultural Park of Valparaíso with the collaboration of the NGO Integra-Valpo and the Communal Office of Migrants of the Illustrious Municipality of Valparaíso to invite the communities to be part of the experience of the stage production “Being a Foreigner in Chile”.

The creation was born due to the importance and urgency of making visible the diversity of stories and perspectives of those who migrate to Chile. For the “Teatro en Casa” Cultural Group, migration must be recognized as a key factor for cultural, social and economic development; Their positive contribution must be recognized, their ability to regenerate diversity, while guaranteeing the protection of the cultural rights of those who migrate.

The work addresses themes that question concepts of identity, territory, racism and gender, inviting the public to rethink the experience of living in Chile and transcend cultural borders alongside performers from Colombia, Serbia-Canada, Venezuela and Haiti. The theatrical production captivates with stories and experiences that propose a deep reflection on the political, social and emotional structures that surround the migration phenomenon.

Nicolas Fernandoisco-director and member of the “Teatro en Casa” Group, expresses that “We currently live in a migration crisis where governments toughen hate speech and discrimination, therefore this work is a meeting of critical humanity regarding the paths that contemporary life has taken.” And he points out that “In this work of collective creation we have tried to stage reflections of vindication and valorization of migratory processes”

The cast member, Marcelo Torrealbalawyer, musician and performing artist from Venezuela, states that “The invitation is for the public to accompany us in the midst of the greatest universal understanding that unites us, which is the notion of knowing ourselves to be vulnerable. We hope that the work touches your hearts and materializes the world that we are all invited to build from our spaces of influence and action.”.

Finally, the executive director (i) of the Valparaíso Cultural Park, Erick Fuentesindicates that“Valparaíso is a city that in its foundations has a fundamental contribution made precisely by migrants. Consequently, it reminds us that it is necessary to look again at our local histories to positively support that migration, in addition to being a human right, is something that brings unavoidable cultural benefits to a society. So we hope that the different communities can attend and value the contribution that this notable theater group makes in a complex contemporary context.”

The performance of “Being a Foreigner in Chile”, recommended for people over 14 years of age, can be seen, free of charge, on Saturday, June 8 at 7:00 p.m. at the Theater of the Cultural Park of Valparaíso.
