The departments of Córdoba and Sucre play a fundamental role in Colombia’s gas reserves, representing approximately 20% of the country’s reserves.. This was stated by Frank Pearl González, president of the Colombian Oil and Gas Association, who highlighted the strategic importance of these regions for national energy security.

According to data revealed by the president of the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH), Colombia currently has proven gas reserves for the next 6 years. In this context, Córdoba and Sucre emerge as key actors to maintain supply to the domestic market and boost exports.

“We are going to continue exploring within the existing contracts to look at new options and increase reserves”, stated Pearl González, who also highlighted the expectation that offshore projects will come into operation within a convenient time frame.

The Colombian Caribbean hosts significant potential for offshore gas reserves, with four projects currently underway. The government has been working hand in hand with companies in the sector to streamline licensing processes and seek the necessary connectivity with the market.

“We hope that at the beginning of next year we will enter a new phase that will allow us to have a start date for these projects, resolving the issue of connectivity,” said the president of the Association.

In addition to their relevance in terms of reserves, Córdoba and Sucre also face challenges in terms of environmental and community conflicts. In this regard, Pearl González indicated that The Association works daily on these aspects, recognizing the right to legal demonstration and protest, but rejecting blockades and strikes that violate the rights of other citizens.

The possible decrease in exploration during the energy transition raises concern about its impact on the royalties received by the regions. However, the Association trusts in the measures taken by the ANH to keep this income stable and proposes support and oversight initiatives for mayors and governorates, strengthening technical capacities and involving citizens in investment projects.
