A technical team from the Disaster Risk Management office traveled to the municipality of Gigante and arrived at the Las Brisas neighborhood to supervise the progress of the project, which consists of the construction of a retaining wall.

“It is important to note that mitigation works in disaster risk management are essential to protect and improve the quality of life of vulnerable communities in the face of adverse natural phenomena. These works, such as the construction of retaining walls, significantly reduce the impact of disasters such as landslides, floods and erosion,” said Isabel Hernández Ávila, coordinator of the Huila Disaster Risk Management Office.

This preventive and structural measure minimizes damage to homes, which is why this retaining wall will benefit approximately 42 homes and 500 people in the Las Brisas neighborhood of the municipality of Gigante.

“The purpose of this retaining wall is to stabilize sloping terrain and prevent landslides, erosion and other terrain-related problems. Retaining walls are structures designed to support and contain the soil behind them, preventing it from shifting and causing damage to people and their property.” said Isabel Hernández Ávila, coordinator of the Office for Disaster Risk Management of Huila.

Financial details and execution process

The total value of the project amounts to $3.2 billion. With the project already reaching 70% of its execution, it is expected that the beneficiary families will soon be able to enjoy the infrastructure improvements that these mitigation works will bring to their environment.
