The manager of the Santo Tomás de Villanueva Hospital, José Javier Fuentes Calderón, said that so far this year there have been 16 cases of dengue without warning signs, of which 13 have already recovered.

He added that 234 cases have been registered with viral symptoms in children under 5 years of age, while in those over 5 years of age there are 347 incidents where 54% have already recovered.

The manager assures that all this is due to the environmental phenomenon due to the rains that have been recorded in the country.

“The issue of fumigation with chemical agents is highlighted by its harmful effects on human health and its scientifically proven adverse effects. As administration and hospitals we have been leading campaigns based on a preventive, predictive and decisive model where the community is the central axis of this process to be able to counteract together the transmitter that is one of the causes of admissions to the hospital emergency room with dengue symptoms, clarifying that everything that arrives at the emergency room is not dengue, it is febrile symptoms of viruses associated with dengue,” he assured.

Specific actions that are being carried out
The manager pointed out that a series of specific actions have been carried out such as talks, workshops against dengue with the student community to make them part of the process and train them as health watchers through the Collective Intervention Plan, fumigation with quaternary ammonium, a product that is not harmful to disinfect areas and environments exposed to the viral infection, collection of unusable items in the different neighborhoods, raising awareness among owners of assembled lots for their proper maintenance and waste collection, radio advertising campaigns and on social networks to raise awareness and what to do about symptoms and signs of dengue alarm.

Taking into account the epidemiological behavior of dengue in the department of La Guajira, where it is observed that for epidemiological week 21 of 2024 the management indicator shows an increase in dengue cases without alarm signs of 298 (98.7%), with signs alarm 441 (99.5%) and severe dengue 5 cases, for which the red alert is issued at the departmental level.
