The data comes from the latest bilateral trade report prepared by the Argentine Chamber of Commerce and Services (CAC).
Meanwhile, compared to the past April The exchange registered a decrease of 4.4%, due to the slight drop in the imports by 0.4% and the sharp decline in exports by 8%.
The Argentine sales to Brazil fell in May 2024 a 3.9% with respect to May 2023. In this way, the variation returned to the negative sign, after March and April 2024 with the opposite sign, when adding 1119 million dollars.
For their part, the imports from that destination were 1,095 million dollars and showed a year-on-year decline of the 42.7%. In that framework, the trade balance for Argentina showed a surplus of 23 million of dollars.
Trade between both countries accumulates in the first five months of the year a positive balance for Argentina for 58 million of dollars. It is worth noting that the exports increased 1.2% in the first five months of 2024 compared to that same period in 2023, while imports from Brazil they decreased by 33.1% in said months.
The year-on-year decline of the exports from Argentina to Brazil registered in May (3.9%) corresponded mainly to the decrease in motor vehicles passenger cars, piston engines and their parts, waste petroleum products and related materials, ethylene polymers and milk, milk cream and dairy products.
While the year-on-year decline of the imports Argentina (42.7%) was mainly explained by the decrease in soyparts and accessories of motor vehicles, passenger motor vehicles and petroleum fuel oil or bituminous minerals (except crude oil).
Argentina was positioned in fourth place among the largest suppliers in Brazil, behind China and Hong Kong and Macau (4,576 million dollars), USA (3814 million dollars) and Germany (1,202 million dollars).
In turn, among the main buyers from Brazil, Argentina was located quarter, in back of China, Hong Kong and Macau (9.69 billion dollars), USA (3,300 million dollars) and Spain (1,508 million dollars).
The Brazil’s exports to the world decreased 7.1% in May 2024 compared to the same month in 2023, going from 32,666 million dollars to 30,338 million dollars. For their part, total imports increased by 0.5% compared to those registered a year ago (US$ 21,688 million in 2023 vs. US$ 21,804 million this year). In this way, the Brazilian trade result was in surplus—for the twenty-eighth consecutive month—at US$8,534 million, a situation similar to that observed in May 2023: in that month the balance had been positive at US$10,978 million.
The market expectations revealed in May by the Central Bank of Brazil showed similar numbers to the previous month in growth matter estimated for 2024 (continues at 2.05%).
Meanwhile, the projection on the annual price increase went up to 3.88% (the previous month it had been 3.72%). Likewise, it is expected that the level of Selic interest rate go up to 10.25% (0.25 percentage points less than the current value). In addition, a slight improvement was observed in the projections of the industrial sector, driven by the recovery of internal and external demand.
