This Sunday Chileans will return to voting centers throughout the country. During the day, the Primary Elections 2024 to define the candidates for mayors and regional governors for the municipal elections next October.
On this occasion, the election will not include all areas of the country. The primaries for governors will be held in only the regions of Coquimbo and Aysén, while the primaries for mayors will be in 60 communes of the national territory.
Are they mandatory?
Participation in the process, through casting a vote, for the Primary Elections for governors and mayors is voluntary, as detailed by the Electoral Service (Servel). Voters can find out their voting location and their polling station by entering consulta.servel.cl.
When are they?
The elections will take place this Sunday, June 9. All polling stations will operate from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., as long as there are no voters waiting in line to cast their vote.
What happens if I don’t vote?
All people who are part of the electoral roll determined for the primary elections and who are members of the political parties that agreed for the 2024 Primary Elections and independents can vote. Members of political parties that have not agreed cannot vote.
As voting is voluntary, not attending the polling places will not mean any fine or sanction.. The case of table members is different, because it is a mandatory task.
If they do not appear, in addition to risking the sanctions that the law indicates, which can be a fine of between 2 to 8 UTM ($131,000 to $524,000 approximately), your tables might not be set up. This would prevent hundreds of people from voting.
