Valparaíso University – For the first time, Valparaíso University will celebrate the anniversary of its foundation

This Friday, June 14, the University of Valparaíso will celebrate its anniversary for the first time, with a solemn ceremony that will take place in the Aula Magna, the same place where the Assembly of the University Community of Valparaíso was held in 1968, representing the three classes. of the University of Chile, constituted de facto and symbolically the Valparaíso Headquarters of the House of Bello.

The origin of the University of Valparaíso dates back to the first half of the last century, in response to the educational needs of the population and the convictions of local leaders regarding the importance of secular and pluralistic higher education training in Valparaíso.

The academic programs taught by the University of Chile, under the supervision of their counterparts in the capital, did not have a relationship of dependence or coordination on the part of that house of studies. In this context, given the concern of academics, officials and students, a process was developed that culminated in the aforementioned assembly, which constitutes the historical precedent that gives rise to the decision to establish as the anniversary date of the University on June 15 of each year.

It is on this significant date that Valparaíso University will recognize those who have completed thirty years of service at the institution. Likewise, the University of Valparaíso Medal will be awarded, a recognition instituted by the university, as a public and regional university, for those scientists, academics, intellectuals, artists and citizens in general, who through their research, findings, inventions, creations, works or actions, contribute to the development of science, culture or the arts at the national, regional or local level. It is granted to a person external to the institution and to someone who belongs to it.

On the occasion, the Chamber Musical Group of the University of Valparaíso will perform the work “Memories of Valparaíso”, Waltz for Piano by J. Strauss, a work that was recently premiered on the occasion of Heritage Day.

The ceremony will be broadcast via streaming on the YouTube channel of the University of Valparaíso.
