New Bethlehem of Bajiráwhich recently became the municipality number 31 of department of Chocó and the 1,104 from Colombia, will experience a historic day this Sunday, June 9. In these elections, 8,972 citizensare authorized to exercise their right to vote to elect the first mayor and Municipal Council.
The creation of Belén de Bajirá occurred after a prolonged process of legal and social disputes between the departments of Chocó and Antioquiaresolved with the approval of Ordinance number 180 of June 27, 2023, by the Departmental Assembly of Chocó. This decision was supported by a referendum held on November 26, 2023, in which citizens voted, overwhelmingly, in favor, thus consolidating the creation of the municipality.
From the National Registry of Civil Status, provisions have been made 11 voting stationsdistributed between the municipal seat and the townships, with a total of 31 tables. They were also designated 231 voting jurorsbetween holders and remnants.
The Electoral Observation Mission (MOE), announced the participation of a team of 20 observerswho will be deployed in the most important voting centers of the municipality, such as Bajirá, Campoalegre, Playa Roja, Blanquicet and Nuevo Oriente.
“The observation of these elections is especially relevant in the context of the emergence of a new municipality, which is expected to contribute to institutional stability, greater governability and progress for the communities of a region with a history of territorial and legal disputes”stated Father Manuel Napoleón García, regional coordinator of the MOE in Chocó.
