For a week now, a monument of Catholic belief has been destroyed by a cargo vehicle that apparently knocked it down accidentally.

The Catholic faithful and, especially, the drivers who travel on the road between Los Curos and Málaga, are outraged by the destruction of the altar of the Virgin of Carmen, in the sector known as La Cuneta in San Andrés, Santander.

Although it was initially thought that vandals or satanic sects were behind this act, the person who destroyed the altar was a driver in an alleged state of intoxication.

Pedro Blanco, a resident of San Andrés, said that a week ago, a turbo was reversing where the Virgin was and its driver did not measure the distance and knocked her down.

“The structure was completely destroyed, although the image itself suffered minor damage. We know that the driver was drunk and lives in the municipality of Guaca. He was reversing and caused the accident. He told us that he was going to fix it, let’s hope he complies,” said Pedro Blanco.

And the image of the mother of Jesus is not only venerated by Catholic believers in this region of the province of García Rovira. The drivers who travel on the ‘risky’ road that connects Los Curos with Malaga entrust themselves to the Virgin so that they do not suffer any mishap along the way.

“I always entrust myself to the little virgin. She prayed an Our Father or a Hail Mary to him and when one passes by, I cross myself. She is the one who protects us on this dangerous road where there are many chasms and there have been many accidents. We hope they fix it soon,” said bus driver Miguel Peña.

Belief in the Virgin of Carmen

The Virgin of Carmen is the patron saint and protector of drivers and travelers. It is celebrated every July 16. The devotion is rooted in Catholic tradition and has been adopted by many drivers as a way to seek divine protection while on the road.

The carriers wear it on amulets or medals with its image as a sign of faith and protection. Likewise, her monuments are installed on the roads of Colombia.
