Once the electoral campaign is over, which has passed without pain or glory through La Rioja – beyond the political ‘salsilla’ provided by visits such as that of the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente -, the voters of La Rioja today elect the political formations that they want that represent them in the European Parliament. For the first time, in all probability, there will be two Riojans by birth, César Luena (PSOE) and Esther Herranz (PP) in the European Parliament, although this situation practically already occurred in 2014 when Herranz herself was elected European deputy and she was accompanied by Maite Pagaza, although not from Riojan, is a resident of Logroño.

Pagaza was elected from position number 2 of the now defunct UPyD formation and repeated her seat in 2019, then with Ciudadanos, and on that occasion accompanying César Luena (PSOE) as a regional representative, although she will not run again for today’s elections. after announcing his retirement from active politics after 25 years.

Thus, Esther Herranz, after the hiatus in 2019, will return to the European Parliament from 13th place on the PP list, while César Luena has an even easier time continuing for another five years from 9th place on the socialist candidacy.

In the last 2019 elections, Spaniards overwhelmingly supported the PSOE, with 32.86% of the votes, which allowed it to obtain 20 seats, followed by the PP, with 20.15% of the votes and 12 seats, while Ciudadanos achieved 12.18% of the vote (8 seats), although the three parties finally won one more after Brexit was confirmed at the end of the year. Now, the polls give the PP the winner, some even doubling its deputies, while the PSOE, according to the majority of polls, would maintain the 20 seats contributed from Spain, so it seems clear that the positions of the Rioja candidates have all the guarantees.

Today 250,008 Riojans can vote. They will be able to do so at 414 tables in 249 polling stations, while voting by mail has been requested by 15,567 citizens, of which 15,542 have been accepted. Likewise, 14,413 Riojans will debut their right to vote in European elections, while 2,559 will be able to vote for the first time in elections.

The final count will conclude on Friday, June 14

Voting by mail has doubled in these elections compared to the previous ones in 2019. Until midnight last Thursday, the Post Office had admitted more than 571,000 votes from citizens who have chosen to exercise their right to vote through this system. Of them, 14,082 were Rioja ballots.

Although the results of the European elections will be known early on Monday, the final count, incorporating postal votes, will be known on Friday, June 14, when the provincial electoral boards will meet to open the votes for the census of residents abroad. .
