One case of infection has been reported Oropouche virus in an Italian traveler returning from Cuba.

The patient, a 26-year-old woman with no relevant medical history, visited Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, from May 12 to 26, 2024, as a VFR (Visiting Friends and Relatives). She presented symptoms upon her return to Italy on May 26, including diarrhea, malaise, high fever, severe headache and nausea during the return flight. She also experienced arthralgias and retro-orbital pain. No rash or rash was observed.

Leukopenia (lymphopenia) was detected and dengue was initially suspected. However, rapid tests for dengue (NS1 antigen, IgM antibodies, IgG) were negative, and RT-PCR for dengue, Zika and chikungunya viruses (in blood and urine) was also negative.

The patient reported that her relatives in Cuba experienced similar symptoms, where there is currently an outbreak of Oropouche virus infection. Oropouche virus (OROV)-specific endpoint RT-PCR was performed, which confirmed the diagnosis of Oropouche virus infection.
