With total normality, at 8:00 am, the national registrar of Civil Status, Hernán Penagosinaugurated the polls for the first elections for mayor and Municipal Council in Nuevo Belén de Bajirá, Chocó.
This municipality was created through the Ordinance no. 180 of June 27, 2023 of the Departmental Assembly of Chocó, and citizens supported its creation through the referendum held on November 26, 2023.
We are pleased to be in Nuevo Belén de Bajirá to begin this unprecedented democratic day in the youngest municipality in the country, which became number 31 in Chocó and 1,104 in the country. We invite the inhabitants of the municipality to go out en masse to exercise their right to vote
declared Hernán Penagos.
Total, 8,972 citizens are eligible to vote in these elections, of which 4,004 are women and 4,968 are men. The National Registry installed 31 voting tables, distributed in 11 positions: one in the municipal seat and 10 in townships.
Likewise, for these elections, 231 voting jurors were appointed (186 regulars and 45 remaining), who received the appropriate training to perform this function.

The new municipality of Colombia
The creation of New Bethlehem of Bajirá As a municipality, it was established after a long process of legal and social dispute between the departments of Chocó and Antioquia, culminating in the approval of ordinance 162 of 2022 by the departmental assembly of Chocó in December 2022.
This decision was reaffirmed through a referendum held in November 2023, in which 3,163 people participatedof which 99.3% supported the creation of the new municipality in Chocó.
Nuevo Belén de Bajirá has a population of 26,304 inhabitants distributed between urban and rural areas, and an electoral potential of 8,972 people. For these elections, 8 candidates were registered for the Mayor’s Office (2 women and 6 men) and 125 for the Council, represented by 11 political parties.
