The Huila Disaster Risk Management Office informed the general community about the current climate situation in the department and the preventive actions that should be taken.

He stressed that Colombia is a country with significant climatic diversity and historical averages show that there are areas of the country where rainfall is abundant and in others, quite low. “For the Andean region where Huila is located, in the month of June, we observed a decrease in rainfall. However, it is important to note that, although there is a decrease, this does not mean that it stops raining completely. Therefore, we are entering the second season of less rain,” highlighted Isabel Hernández Ávila, Coordinator of the Huila Disaster Risk Management Office.

In the short and medium term, the various international climate prediction models show that, after the end of El Niño, there would be a transition of approximately two months with neutral conditions in the Pacific Ocean, which would give way to the La Niña phenomenon. From this, it can be seen that the less rainy season of 2024 could be influenced by the onset of La Niña.

“We recognize the presence of the second season of less rain in the middle of the year, which extends from mid-June to mid-September. For this reason, the necessary preventive actions must be carried out to be prepared for any climatic eventuality,” said Isabel Hernández Ávila.
