On June 8, 1924, Ernesto Cortissoz and five founding crew members of the German Colombo Transport Society undertook one of the most important flights to Barranquilla.

From the air they would distribute leaflets to pressure the national government with the construction of the Bocas de Ceniza breakwaters.

“Unfortunately there was a mishap, it is said that there was a cloud. Pilot Hellmuth von Krohn, a World War I hero, dodged the cloud and maneuvered. As he was loaded with heavy paper boxes, He swayed and lost his balance.said Jaime Cortissoz, grandson of Ernesto Cortissoz.

A tragedy that left the entire city in mourning and had a great impact on the history of aviation.

“This plane was the sixth to arrive in the country, but “Aviation at that time was only for brave people,” said Jairo Escobar, vice president of the Colombian Academy of Aerial History.

However, the painful accident and death of Ernesto Cortissoz became the impetus that allowed the construction of the breakwaters in Bocas de Ceniza to be consolidated. A legacy of courage and interest in progress that today his family continues from generation to generation.

Next to the Bronze Eagle monument, the people of Barranquilla paid tribute solemn to these founders of aviation who sacrificed their lives for progress.
