Spring shows all its faces in 24 hours

Sunday, June 9, 2024, 18:28

It’s been this way practically since it began, but this weekend has become the clearest example of the many faces that spring presents. Not in vain, Riojans have gone from fighting the strong heat on Saturday morning to opening their umbrellas later in the afternoon and early morning. And this Sunday they recovered the sweater from the closet after a considerable drop in temperatures.

Saturday’s highs were around 33 degrees. They were recorded early in the afternoon and, according to the data offered by the State Meteorological Agency, the cake went to the Alfaro area, where 32.9 degrees were reached at 3:40 p.m. The heat was strong both in La Rioja Baja and in the center, since in Logroño the mercury also reached 32 degrees.

Those high temperatures on Saturday have given way to much milder ones. More than 10 degrees difference from the previous day. Not in vain, Alfaro has gone from those 32.9 to the maximum 19.8 recorded this Sunday. Even so, the Rioja town has once again set the highest record, so that nowhere in La Rioja has it reached 20 degrees this Sunday.

First heat; Much cooler temperatures afterwards. And in between, water. Episodes of storms and very localized rainfall in which Calahorra clearly stood out from the rest. In the two-thousand-year-old city, the early morning was marked by rain. Not in vain, in around three and a half hours (from 00:30 to 04:00) more than 50 liters per square meter fell, according to the data offered by the SOS Rioja meteorological stations.

That figure is striking, since in the surrounding towns the volume of water was much smaller. Not in vain, in Alfaro 7.2 liters per square meter were collected and in Arnedo and Cervera the figure remained at 5.9. According to José Calvo, from Meteosojuela, it is not strange that so much water fell in Calahorra and much less in the surrounding municipalities. “It is usually common for these episodes to concentrate on a specific point and in this case it was Calahorra,” he points out.

In Logroño, for its part, it rained more during the afternoon-night of Saturday than in the early morning for a total of 5.6 liters. In those last hours of Saturday, meanwhile, the most abundant rainfall occurred in the stations of Urbaña (25.8 liters per square meter), Villoslada (21.7) and Santa Marina (14.9).

Forty-eight hours, therefore, of a climate of contrasts that will continue in the coming days with days of mild temperatures, similar to those of this Sunday, throughout the autonomous community. Overcast skies and the possibility of rain at some times of the day, although the region is not, at least for the moment, on alert for any type of meteorological phenomenon.
