La Rioja will have a solar eclipse in 2026

Rioja residents will be able to enjoy a total solar eclipse in the summer of 2026, an astronomical event that has not happened in the region since 2015. On Wednesday, August 12 of that year, the entire Rioja will be within the margins that will allow them to experience The phenomenon.

The eclipse will enter Spain, around 7:30 p.m., along the Galician coast, after beginning its journey in Greenland and touching the east of Iceland. An hour later it will be total, that is, the moon will completely cover the solar disk for a few moments.

The center of this band is called the line of centrality and runs through the places from which the eclipse lasts the longest.

An eclipse for emptied Spain

The final part of the eclipse reaches Spanish territory, to the point that in the Balearic Islands the phenomenon ends very close to sunset. Therefore, totality will be visible in the late afternoon and at a lower altitude above the horizon the further east we are.

Even so, the Iberian Peninsula will be the best place in the world to see the eclipse, since the band of totality, that is, the margins of visibility, eludes Portugal and does not pass through any other country on the continent.

We will have to be very attentive, since this moment of absolute overlap will not exceed two minutes. In Logroño, for example, at 7:33 p.m. the partial eclipse will begin to be perceived, which will be total at 8:28 p.m. for one minute and twenty-one seconds. To know in detail the schedules of other locations you can consult an interactive map.

Within the region the start time of the eclipse almost does not change, but the duration is more sensitive. For example, in Santo Domingo de la Calzada the phenomenon can be seen for 17 seconds longer than in Calahorra.

Now, to enjoy it a little more you will have to get closer to the line of centrality. Burgos and Soria are two of the cities closest to La Rioja through which this line will pass very closely, which will allow us to see a little more how the moon sets in front of the sun.

If one eclipse is an unusual event, three is already a unique opportunity in history. In Spain, three eclipses can be seen: the aforementioned one in 2026, another total solar eclipse in 2027 and, finally, an annular eclipse in 2028. Unfortunately, the last two will not be able to be seen from La Rioja, so we will have to prepare. for an appointment in two years with unique experience.
