The youngest municipality in Colombia celebrates the festival of democracy: Nuevo Belén de Bajirá, in Chocó, will elect its mayor and councilors today. This territory is located in the middle of a banana paradise and the beauty of the Atrato River.

It is the municipality number 1,104 from Colombia and 31 from the department of Chocó, that will decide who will be its first mayor.
“After 24 years of struggle, of dispute over the territory, after having had deaths, dispossession, citizens standing up to defend the integrity of the department of Chocó. This is not only celebrated by the inhabitants, but by the people of the entire territory,” said Nubia Carolina Córdoba, governor of Chocó.
For his part, Hernán Penagos, national registrar, stated that the democracy festival in that municipality “is a job of months, we already have the municipal Registry Office, one that has all the technological equipment. In fact, a significant number of civil registration, identity card and identity card procedures have already been carried out.”.
It is a fight that has already ceased with the democratic party: more than 8 thousand people authorized to vote and thousands of dreams that they want to come true.
“We are going to have progress, we are going to have development. The doors will be open for all the great things that the country has, for the growth of the community,” said Eliana Manuela Mosquera, a resident of Nuevo Belén de Bajirá.
This municipality writes a new history after the border dispute that for years pitted the departments of Antioquia and Chocó. Today, its residents will elect the first person who will take the reins for the next 3 years and 6 months.
