Ivonne Toro has spent four years investigating the failures of the State that allowed Ámbar Cornejo and Hugo Bustamante to cross paths. Toro discovered that Bustamante, in addition to murdering Ámbar Cornejo, had also killed a mother and her son in 1996.added to Verónica Vásquez and her 9-year-old son, Eugenio Honorato, who was found inside a drum in 2005.

Subprefect Víctor Salazar, head of the Valparaíso homicide brigade, led the investigations at the scene. lThe investigations were motivated by the information provided by the Gendarmerie and press personnel.which was corroborated by the Public Ministry.

“The physical location, which corresponded to his (Bustamante’s) private property, located in the patio area, was where the discovery occurred this afternoon. In fact, the place where the well was, indicated by Bustamante, was at an approximate distance of 3 to 4 meters from the room where, unfortunately, Ámbar Cornejo died. in 2020″, he noted.

The revelation of these additional crimes began with a series of interviews that Ivonne Toro conducted with Bustamante for her book “The Amber Girl.” During these interviews, Bustamante confessed to having murdered Elena Hinojosa and Eduardo Páez, mother and son who have been missing since 1996.

Toro detailed that Bustamante’s confession was obtained after he finally answered the question about whether he had killed more people. “He fits the entire profile of what I read, that he is a textbook psychopath. The only thing I don’t understand is that the first homicide is that of Eugenio and Verónica when he was 40 years old. And that is where my concern arises. I tell her point-blank: ‘Have you killed more people?’, and she responds: ‘Nowhere does that come out.’ And that’s not a normal response.”, he explained to CHV.

Then, Bustamante provided the incomplete names of his victims, which Toro investigated and managed to corroborate the worst: Hinojosa and Páez’s family confirmed that both had been missing since 1996. “He tells me, ‘I have a gift for you about your question.’ He gives me these two names, which are incomplete.“, he claimed.

Following these findings, Toro confronted Bustamante once again, asking him for the exact location of the bodies. Although Bustamante did not do so at the time, he eventually confessed last Thursday, allowing authorities to locate the remains.
