The drop in tax collection has led to the question of whether the Petro government is going to aim for a new tax reform to recover the income that is lacking and that puts pressure on resource management in Colombia.

Ricardo Bonilla, Minister of Finance of Colombia, referred to the situation and the mechanisms that the executive is reviewing to resolve the problem.

Faced with the idea of leading a tax reform in Colombia as a measure to resolve the situationthe minister explained that first they will have to sit down with the new director of the DIAN to understand the magnitude of the need and make decisions.

The hypothesis comes out because the $20 billion missing that the Petro government calculates It is precisely the annual goal that the tax collection approved in the country during 2022 had as collection.

Does Colombia need a new tax reform?

In an interview with El Tiempo, Bonilla assured that it is necessary to establish the tools available to the Government to act and solve the problem in the shortest time possible.

“What we are going to do with the new director of the DIAN, Jairo Orlando Villabona, is to evaluate what has happened with the previous reforms and to what extent they have been exhausted or are missing things that can be developed, above all, the most important “It is doing fiscal management and separating what corresponds to natural persons,” said Bonilla when asked if a new tax reform will be studied in Colombia.

It must be remembered that, as Minister Bonilla has mentioned, the budgetary urgency for Colombia is to have resources in the order of $20 billion.

Although some analysts explain that this estimate would be somewhat further away if one takes into account that it would double the resources that President Petro’s government would need to comply with the Fiscal Rule.
