The environmental authorities of the department of Córdoba declared a red alert in 14 of the 30 municipalities in this section of the country due to the imminent risk of flooding, following the high levels in the Sinú and San Jorge rivers.

In the case of the Sinú River, they are on alert Tierralta, Valencia, Montería, Cereté, San Pelayo, Cotorra, Lorica and Saint Bernard of the Wind.

Meanwhile, along the San Jorge River, the alert extends to jurisdictions such as Planeta Rica, La Apartada, Buenavista, Puerto Libertador, Montelíbano and Ayapel.

Following the panorama, the director of the Regional Autonomous Corporation of the Sinú and San Jorge Valleys (CAR – CVS), Orlando Medina, maintained that the red alert was issued due to the high rainfall that is being recorded in the department of Córdoba.

According to what is established, said rainfall would be 54% above the historical figures for the month of June.

In that sense, the intense rains have raised the flow levels of the Sinú River and the San Jorge River, which would be above 750 cubic meters and peaks of up to 950 cubic meters, “when The overflow level of the Sinú River is between 750 and 800 cubic meters”.

“It means that at this time the most critical points of the Sinú River will surely present overflow along its length and width. In the San Jorge River, we are also presenting extremely high levels compared to historical records, with a dam break in the municipality of Buenavista, specifically in the Tierra Santa sector. This would be reflected in the municipality of Pueblo Nuevo, in the Nueva Esperanza and Puerto Santo sectors,” warned the director of the CVS.

Faced with the delicate panorama, the CVS urged the riverside municipalities to activate the municipal risk management councils in the event of any eventuality.

Reactions of the Government of Córdoba to the emergency:

“In order to expand information regarding the red alert that was declared in the middle and lower basins of the Sinú River, Governor Erasmo Zuleta Bechara convened the team of the Regional Autonomous Corporation of the Sinú Valleys, CVS, to a working group. . At the meeting, other critical points in the department that are at risk due to the rains that are causing the river to overflow were also identified. It should be remembered that Córdoba is within the areas of the region on alert for tropical cyclones and that it may soon be affected by the La Niña phenomenon.“, stated the Government of Córdoba through a press release.

“Governor Erasmo Zuleta Bechara was emphatic about the need to once again convene all municipal risk management committees to report the declaration of public calamity and thus know in depth the situation that each of the territories is going through,” added the departmental administration.

It should be remembered that currently in five of the 30 municipalities of the department a public calamity was declared due to the intense rains. The last to join the list was the municipality of Lorica.
