Hialeah approves measure against local businesses linked to Cuba

The government of Hialeah, in Miami, approved this Tuesday a measure against the expansion of local businesses, such as CubaMax, linked to Cuba and which even have offices in Havana, the press reported.

According to the television channel Telemundo 51, the controversy arose when said local business asked officials for expansion and they responded that they did not favor companies linked to the Cuban government or that profited from the town’s crisis.

Local authorities detailed that this resolution, recently approved unanimously in Hialeah, would affect any business with tentacles on the island, such as travel agencies, remittances to Cuba, package shipping, etc.

In this regard, Hialeah Councilman Bryan Calvo expressed to the local press that they have many concerns with the advancement of these ventures with contacts in Havana from South Florida. This means that the city government will not provide aid or grant concessions.

These businesses will not be given the opportunity to grow and receive concessions from the city of Hialeah,” said Calvo.

We are seeing this Cuban intervention here in South Florida and for me it is more than evidence that this company CUBAMAX, which has strong ties with the Cuban government, wants to grow here in the city of Hialeah. You have to be very firm,” he added.

Hialeah launches attack against local businesses linked to Cuba

Why is Hialeah launching it now against local businesses linked to Cuba? According to the city’s mayor, Esteban Bovo, the position of politicians in South Florida is clear.

As a city and as a government, we are not going to conduct any type of business with entities that are profiting from the suffering of the Cuban people,” he stated.

I am clear that the people have their families in Cuba and want to help their families. I would never raise my voice against that, but fueling the government to continue the repression seems like a useless proposal to me,” the mayor added.

The authorities stressed the need to implement a more rigorous program to inspect and regulate these companies, emphasizing that this is the responsibility of the government of Hialeah and Miami in general.
