Will classes be suspended? SENAPRED declares Yellow Alert in the Coquimbo Region due to rainfall

The National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED) has declared a Yellow Alert for the Coquimbo Region and has canceled the Preventive Early Warning due to a meteorological event.

This decision is based on the information provided by the Chilean Meteorological Directorate (DMC), which has issued several meteorological warnings for the region.

According to the DMC, the following weather warnings are in effect for the Coquimbo Region:

  • AAA3 alarm: Intense precipitation in a short period of time on the coast, coastal mountain range, foothills and foothill valleys (June 13).

Forecast of Swells and Danger of Mass Disposals

The Meteorological Service of the Chilean Navy has predicted abnormal storm surges for the coastal areas of the region, from Wednesday, June 12 to Friday, June 14, which has led to maintaining the Preventive Early Warning for Abnormal Storms in the coastal communities.

In addition, the National Geology and Mining Service (SERNAGEOMIN) has updated its Technical Minutes indicating a high probability of mass removals, such as debris flows, alluvium, landslides and rock falls on the coast, coastal mountain range, longitudinal valley and foothills, and a moderate probability in the mountain range of the region.

Measures and Resources

In consideration of this background and in coordination with the Regional Presidential Delegation of Coquimbo, SENAPRED has declared the Regional Yellow Alert.

This alert will allow the necessary resources to be prepared in stages to intervene according to the evolution of the event, with the aim of preventing the meteorological event from growing in extent and severity, minimizing the negative effects on people, their property and the environment.

The Yellow Alert declaration will be in effect from today and will remain in place until the conditions of the meteorological event warrant it.

The authorities call on the population to stay informed and follow official instructions to ensure the safety and protection of all inhabitants of the region.
