Numerous memories during the day to highlight the teaching and research career of the current director of the Department of Chemistry.

Among anecdotes, thanks and numerous memories, the 40th anniversary of the academic and director of the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Jaime Llanos Silva, was commemorated at the Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN).

In the activity, Sabina Montoya, head of courses at the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Sciences, expressed that “This is a very special event for us, since most of the academics who are in this department were his students, as well as those who had him as a tutor today are doctors. We are heading in the scientific world thanks to the support, tutoring and mentoring of Professor Llanos”.

Friends and colleagues of Dr. Llanos participated in the event, among them Dr. Carlos Mujica, with whom they met at the UCN, where they studied undergraduate and graduate degrees, developing a great friendship that has lasted over time. “We have known each other for 50 years, since we enrolled in Chemistry right here. We live together various processes of growth and learning, we travel the world, first for work and then for hobby or studies”.

Likewise, he highlighted the passion they have had since the beginning of their friendship: “We have seen, played and enjoyed football in its splendor for decades, always together and with a great laugh, although we never stood out in it”.

When addressing those present, Professor Llanos excitedly stated that “It is very difficult for me to tell anecdotes, my stories or experiences with colleagues and friends. I thank the University for the opportunities they gave me from the beginning and in this time in which we have managed to consolidate our Department, and to everyone with whom I shared during my professional and personal career. I hope to continue contributing my knowledge to students and future colleagues”.

After that, he gave the talk “From student to teacher and researcher… +40 years of learning in chemistry”, delving into his career and contributions to the UCN Community.

He then recalled his research history, his doctorate and various degrees and diplomas, as well as dozens of studies published in renowned scientific journals, also passing through Germany and Spain, where he would solve problems that had not been able to be addressed at the local level.

Meanwhile, Dr. Pere Alemany, professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics at the University of Barcelona, pointed out that “without previously knowing Jaime, only by works of fate, our work and the passion we felt for science, we worked together and to this day we visit him with the family. But always, when my boss and colleague asked me to do calculations for a new project by Dr. Llanos, I remembered a classic phrase: ‘I have a feeling that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.’”.
