“Bambuco, a rhythm that was born in the midst of the search to represent the Colombian feeling”, this is how the Cucuteño Juan Hernando Sánchezknown as the master of Bambuco describes this type of dance.

After having dedicated 44 years of his life to northern Santander bambuco, Juan has received the gold grandmaster award at the National Bambuco Congress in Colombia coordinated by Folklore Colombia in Facatativá, Cundinamarca.

Juan was the founder of the folk dance group in the Francisco de Paula Santander Universitywhere he has worked as a teacher for 35 years, transmitting his knowledge and passion for this genre to several generations who have managed to stand out and carry high the name of Cúcuta and Norte de Santander to a large part of the national territory.

“So much so that some called it the group ‘heritage of the Norte Santandereans’ because they carried the identity of the department,” he stated.

Although Sánchez tried to do an agricultural technique in his adolescence, from an early age music became a pillar in his life to the point of learning with great effort empirically about this musical genre.

“I once wanted to study agricultural technology but I was pulled away, it was dance that pulled me away, it was wanting to play the piano, everything about music won me over”

In the midst of his professional growth in bamboo has decided to focus on highlighting the northern region. Throughout his work he has collected the rhythms that represent the identity of the different municipalities and has been in charge of producing new versions in collaboration with the department’s own composers.

Among the most recognized dances of the department, the ‘Brisas del Pamplonita’, ‘La Ocañerita’, ‘La grime’ and ‘La nortesantandereana’ stand out.

Juan explained that the bambuco lost its original essence, which was the dance of conquest, “unfortunately, over time, the bambuco has become more gymnastic and that is not the natural reason for this genre.”
