Today, the streets of Santa Marta were filled with protesters in a massive march organized by Fecode and Edumag. The event was attended by teachers from Samario and Magdalen, as well as students and management staff from SENA and other workers in the educational sector. The protest was carried out in rejection of the modifications introduced in the third debate of the statutory education bill in the Congress of the Republic.

From the early hours of the morning, protesters gathered in different parts of the city, carrying banners and chanting slogans in defense of quality public education. Union leaders expressed their firm opposition to the proposed changes, arguing that they violate the labor rights of teachers and the quality of education in the country.

“The amendments made by Congress are a blow against public education. They affect us because they are taking away the opportunity of the three grades of preschool and are making the Knowledge Test of students subject to teachers,” declared one of the leaders of Edumag. “We will not allow reforms to be approved that negatively affect our students and the entire educational community.”

The protest began on Avenida El Libertador and, at approximately 9:00 am, moved towards Avenida del Ferrocarril until reaching the intersection with Avenida Santa Rita (22nd Street), and then ended at Plaza de Bolívar.
