The attack in Jamundí (Valle del Cauca) on June 12 generated a wave of criticism against President Gustavo Petro, for his apparent inattention to the escalation of violence in Colombia. Several opposition politicians questioned his trip to Sweden on June 11 and his constant statements regarding the situation in Palestine, which has been attacked by the Israeli Army since October 7, 2023.
Senator Miguel Uribe spoke about the Jamundí attack, perpetrated with a motorbike, in a session of the Third Commission of the Senate. He showed an image of a man of foreign nationality who was seriously injured in the attack. In his intervention he regretted the death of the citizen, although he later corrected it by clarifying that he was informed from Cali that he is still alive.

“This photo is not Gaza, it is Colombia, it is Jamundí, this morning. It is Mr. Don Rafael who took care of motorcycles and who has just died in Valle de Lili in the Cali clinic (sic). It is outrageous to see what is happening today, to see police officers injured again, due to the inaction of this Government. It is painful to see how this Government cares more about what happens anywhere in the world and not about what happens in our country.“, stated the congressman in the session.
For this reason, he demanded that the president assume “his responsibility” and implement a “serious” security policy in the country. “There is no economy that survives, if there is no security, without security there will be no economy to defend,” he added.
The head of state responded to the accusations of the senator of the Democratic Center party, showing a video of the situation of violence faced by the citizens of Palestine. The recording shows a girl whose house, apparently located in the village of Kafr Dan, west of Jenin, in Palestine, was destroyed by Israeli “occupation forces.”. “Give me the key, it will be a memory for me,” the minor mentioned, through tears, to the journalist who was recording her.
Gustavo Petro then questioned the congressman for criticizing his statements regarding situations that occur outside the country. Likewise, he pointed out that he does not agree with the protests that are put forward against the extrajudicial executions, wrongly called “false positives”, that occurred during the administration of former President Álvaro Uribe.
“Miguel Uribe Turbay doesn’t like that I protest about this because it is far from Colombia. He also doesn’t like that he protests for the 6,402 young people who were murdered in Colombia with official bullets because it is very Colombian and it was because of the government he defends.“, indicated the president in X.
Miguel Uribe once again attacked Gustavo Petro for his alleged inattention and inaction in the face of attacks by armed groups in the country. “While Petro is distracted by international problems, in Colombia we suffer his abandonment. Petro’s lack of control is total. Without security there is no life. Without security there is no economy,” he said.
The senator was not the only one to question the head of state about the terrorist actions of illegal organizations. Congressman Miguel Polo Polo also referred to the attack in Jamundí and pointed out that the leftist ideology represented by the Petro Government is a “disaster” in terms of security.
“This is NOT Palestine, it is the south west of the country (Jamundí). This is the change, the world power of life, total peace. Petro, his defense minister and his security policy are killing Colombians and strengthening terrorism. A motorcycle bomb has just exploded in the heart of the urban center of one of the largest municipalities in the Valley. War is no longer in the mountains, now it is in the cities. The left is a disaster,” he wrote.
