The W learned for the first time that, on this Wednesday afternoon, the commander of the Fifth Brigade of the National Army based in Bucaramanga, in Santander, he was asked through the institution’s own commander to request his discharge and leave. The officer had been the head of Army Intelligence during the government of former president Iván Duque.

Although the reasons for the decision are not known, La W was able to establish that the resignation was requested by General Luis Cardozo himself, commander of the National Army, in his office in Bogotá, where General Vera arrived after being summoned. In fact, sources consulted by La W assure that It would not be the only movement that would come in the coming days, since there is talk of the possibility that other officers could be called to qualify services or be asked to leave.

Everything is due to the movements in which Colonel (r) Juan Carlos Mazo, who is a key player in Intelligence in the Petro Government, would be involved. “If you analyze it, it may be that Mazo is making his way, General Vera was the only intelligence officer left and it is no secret to anyone that Cardozo returned for recommendation of Colonel Mazo, who whispers in the ear of the Minister of Defense (…) Mazo and Cardozo worked together in Indumil,” said a senior officer consulted by La W, after learning of the decision.

In fact, La W consulted other military sources, who indicated that within the Army there is talk of the possibility that Colonel (r) Juan Carlos Mazo could be reinstated, something that, although it seems unlikely, would have been consulted with the legal part of the institution to look for alternatives and give the possibility.

It is expected that this Thursday morning a conclave of generals will begin to address various issues, so it is not ruled out that the imminent departure of General Vera, which shook the ranks of the National Army.
