The situation in the educational sector of the municipality of Algeciras, Huila, continues to be very critical, where 3,200 students complete a month and a half without the service of the school feeding program. suspended by the departmental Secretary of Education at the end of April due to public order problems.
The mayor of Algeciras, Alexander Martínez, in dialogue with Blu Radio pointed out that, as a result of the suspension of the PAE program, has generated the first cases of school dropouts, arguing that many students reside in villages that are very isolated from educational facilities.
“There are more than 3,000 boys and girls from the rural sector who have been without the service of the PAE program for more than a month, a known issue in the region. We have had different meetings in the governor’s office and also at the national level, but progress has been minimal in being able to reestablish the program. We are concerned because we already have cases of school dropouts in the rural sector, students who no longer go to school classrooms, because many children live in sidewalks very far from schools,” said Mayor Martínez.
The local president said that he will take advantage of the mid-year school holidays to search with organizations non-governmental and state entities, urgent solutions to guarantee the service of the PAE program for the second school period 2024.
“During the students’ recess days I will take the opportunity to look for an urgent solution and be able to normalize the supply of food to the children and also find a way for the students who have withdrawn to return to classes. Another alternative is to seek support through the church, the Red Cross, even the High Commissioner for Peace, because the truth is in Algeciras we are worried about not being able to provide the PAE service to students,” he said.
In this sense, after the suspension of the PAE program in the municipality of Algeciras, Huila, 77 women who worked as food handlers among other people have also been affected.
