The mayor of Córdoba, José María Bellido, has formally requested the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Junta de Andalucía to subsidize 100% entry to museums and monuments for the local population (which may include residents and/or born in Córdoba).

The Cordoba councilor and president of the Andalusian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FAMP) has explained that he himself conveyed this possibility on June 4 to the Minister of Tourism Arturo Bernal.

However, as detailed this Thursday in the Plenary Session of the City Council, Bernal pointed out at that time that legally it is complex to establish regulations that discriminate by place of residence, although he has not ruled out that it will be studied.

It so happens that, in the municipal museums and cultural enclaves of Córdoba (Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, Museo Romero de Torres, Museo Taurino and Baños del Alcázar Califal), residents of the city do not pay to enter. The rest of the visitors do, whether national or foreign, unlike Andalusian-owned museums, where anyone born in the European Union can enter for free.

The statements by the mayor of Córdoba have occurred in a plenary session in which both the Socialist Group and Hacemos Córdoba have asked him to oppose the measure announced by the Ministry of Tourism to start charging Andalusians for entry to the monumental complexes and museums that it manages in the autonomous community, arguing that the people of Córdoba already pay for it through their taxes.

Initially, Bellido already commented publicly that he saw it as “reasonable” that there was a charge to enter these spaces, remembering that the Córdoba City Council charges tourists for entry into its spaces.

This Thursday, however, he acknowledged that he has specifically requested that the Cordoba charging model – which exempts residents from paying – be transferred to that proposed by the Junta de Andalucía for its monuments and museums.
