“The citizens of Formentera neither support bullfighting nor these retrograde actions,” explains the Franz Weber Animal Foundation.

The Franz Weber Animal Foundation, which continues with its awareness campaign against the potential return of minors’ access to bullfighting activities in the Balearic Islands, has asked Sa Unió this Thursday to change its vote after the debate held in the Balearic Parliament on this proposition. The deputy for Formentera, Llorenç Córdoba, did not intervene in the taking into consideration and abstained from it.

As explained by the animal rights foundation, “in Formentera there is no interest in bullfighting or in this type of actions that set back legislation by three decades.” In this sense, they also wanted to remember that Sa Unió governs an island that was declared a ‘Child Friendly City’ for the period 2024-2027 and, therefore, “its policies, government action and the executive’s position in extension of its only insular deputy should be aimed at scrupulous respect for the International Convention on the Rights of the Child,” they have pointed out.

In fact, the historical-social position of the Pitiusas Islands on bullfighting was recently recalled by Senator Juanjo Ferrer who during his speech in a motion on the matter explained that “there is no tradition and it is not considered part of our culture or of our patrimonial or material inheritance.

Rubén Pérez, coordinator of the Childhood Without Violence campaign, points out that “Sa Unió must rectify its initial vote and is in time to do so, starting with the constitution of the Presentation of this legislative proposal and marking a direction contrary to the access of girls, boys and adolescents to these activities of recognized violence.”
