The La Niña phenomenon is approaching in Colombia and could generate serious impacts in the Caribbean and Córdoba, regions that still remember the damage caused by the winter waves of 2007 and 2011.

According to the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM), There is a 63% probability that La Niña will begin in July of this year, with greater intensity in the September-November quarter.

Ghislaine Echeverri, director of IDEAM in dialogue with LARAZÓN.CO warned that scenarios similar to those experienced in 2010-2011 are being modeled for these areas of the country.

“Precisely something that we do to accompany risk management is to look for similar years and scenarios and what we are modeling right now, even for Mojana, is the 2010-2011 scenario, because we are predicting something very similar,” said Echeverri.

Ghislaine Echeverri, director of IDEAM at the FND governors summit in Montería.

The director of IDEAM explained that the rapid change between El Niño and La Niña, added to the accumulated impacts of going from a very strong drought to intense rains, It makes soils more susceptible to erosion and river flows increase significantly, generating greater risk for populations.

Given this situation, Echeverri called on municipal authorities and mayors to take prevention and risk management measures in the coming months. “The most important recommendation that we always make is to consult official sources when we are in extreme weather events, when we are at significant risks.”he emphasized.

The inhabitants of the Caribbean and Córdoba are preparing to face once again the possible havoc that La Niña can cause in its territories.

Local authorities and the population are on alert for the intense rains expected in the coming months, with the hope that prevention and mitigation measures will be sufficient to avoid the serious consequences experienced in the past.
