Blood is the engine that physically moves our body. It is indispensable and irreplaceable. Still, science has not advanced enough to manufacture it in a laboratory, so the need for blood can only be met with solidarity through donation. And Manuel Diéguez Santiesteban, a man from Córdoba who has been donating blood for a whopping 40 years, knows a lot about it. He is one of the “flagships” of the Córdoba Tissue and Cell Transfusion Center, which this Friday celebrates World Blood Donor Day. Córdoba is in leading positions, approaching the rate of 40 units of blood per 1,000 inhabitants, a figure higher than the Andalusian and Spanish averages, which stand at 35 units per 1,000 inhabitants.

The reason for this anniversary is all those blood donors who help other people get ahead. The choice of June 14 responds to a tribute to the day of the birth of Karl Landsteiner, Austrian pathologist and biologist who discovered blood groups.
