Just on a day like today, June 13, 70 years ago television began in Colombia. The first image and sound that viewers saw on the screen were the notes of the National Anthem, followed by the words of the president at the time, Gustavo Rojas Pinilla.

Within the framework of the commemoration of the seven decades of television in the country, RTVC, the Public Media System, and the Colombian Film Heritage Foundation (FPFC), joined together to publish the book 70 years of TV in Colombia 1954 – 2024.

“The work, which is divided into four chapters, brings together texts by lawyers, writers, journalists, social communicators, business administrators, historians, engineers, scriptwriters, television producers and directors, who captured their memories and experiences in relation to television. Colombian”, RTVC reports.

Within this celebration, the Public Media System highlighted the seven great milestones of television in the country:

1. First broadcast of Colombian television: On Sunday, June 13, 1954, at 7:00 p.m., the first television broadcast was made in Colombia.

2. First important transmission in Colombia: It was in 1958 with the presentation of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the Teatro Colón in Bogotá.

3. Arrival of color television: Color television arrived in Colombia in December 1979, that is, 25 years after the first black and white transmission, which took place in 1954.

4. Television: A revolution of national unity, education and culture

5. The creation of the programmers: Producciones Punch was the first private programmer on Colombian television. For its part, RCN emerged in 1967 and Caracol in 1969. Likewise, there were also RTI, Coestrellas, Tevecine, among others.

6. Appearance of private channels: On July 10, 1998, it changed to Colombian television, as it was the date on which two private channels went on air: RCN and Caracol.

7. Advertising on television: Companies interested in marketing their products and services rented the spaces of the Commercial Television Company (TVC) and there advertised in game shows, music magazines and others.
