During the hearing held on June 13, a judge from the Bucaramanga circuit read the sentence that condemns the former presidential candidate and former mayor of Bucaramanga to more than five years in prison for the crime of undue interest in entering into a contract as an author.

The Vitalogic case, in which Hernández was found guilty, focuses on the awarding of a consulting contract to Mr. Jorge Alarcón for a value of 360 million pesos, a contract carried out through the Bucaramanga Cleaning Company (EMAB). The objective of this contract was to prepare the bidding documents to choose the operator of the new technology for waste management at the El Carrasco landfill for the next 30 years.

The Prosecutor’s Office supported its accusation by presenting emails that evidenced Rodolfo Hernández’s interest in the assignment of the contract. In these emails, Luis Carlos Hernández, Rodolfo’s son, sent Jorge Alarcón’s proposal to officials from the Bucaramanga Mayor’s Office and the EMAB.

Given this decision and under the difficult medical circumstances he is experiencing today, the former presidential candidate has declared his intention to appeal the ruling. “The ruling will be appealed to the Superior Court of Santander and, in that case, it could go all the way to the Supreme Court.”

The sentence of more than five years in prison represents a hard blow for the former mayor of Bucaramanga, who had reached the second round in the last presidential elections.
