Water polo: the dreams of “Chapu” Stegmayer

Nahir Stegmayer, who started swimming at the Lawn Tennis Club Esperancino and then dabbled in different water sports, came to walter polo in 2016 at the invitation of boys from the faculty who trained at night.

While practicing it, she began to join the National Team, which led her to settle in Santa Fe to improve performance and find other possibilities and grow a little more.

“Chapu”, who always found her place in the world being in a pool since all the sports she did did so in the water where she feels comfortable, declared that “doing a sport in the water and as a team was the best decision I made.”

On the other hand, he made reference to what is coming up for “Las Tiburonas”: the South American Cup in Cali (Colombia) that will take place in the last days of September, and in November the UANAMA Cup, which is a Cup of the Americas and a part of the World League. There, they will seek to maintain or improve the last place they obtained in the Odesur Paraguay 2022 Games and in the Pan American Games in Chile that took place last year where they placed fourth after losing against Brazil.

Although they were a little angry about the defeat, over time they realized what they had achieved, since Argentina in previous Pan American Games did not qualify or finished seventh or eighth place; and getting fourth place was something historic.

Unlike previous years, where the Federation paid for their travel and training, currently they are not in a position to do so. For this reason, the players make a profit (selling the team’s jersey and merchandising) to cover expenses and be able to compete in the same way.

Currently, it is a group of 25 players from all over the country where half play in the National League and the other in Europe. This weekend they are scheduled by coaches Guillermo Setti and Fabio Lombardo where the cutting of players will begin for the final assembly of the list.

Regarding whether she sees herself selected for the South American, she stated that she has to work hard and continue growing in her own and the team’s performance, and take advantage of the concentrations that are once a month.

It is worth remembering that his arrival at the Tiburonas is due to the coach of the Lawn Tennis Club Esperancino Nicolás Huésped who brought the name to the National Team and who has now returned to teaching Tennis. Nahir is the only Santa Fe native in the senior team.

At the local level, he trains at Regatas Santa Fe every day (pool and gym) with the men’s team since there is no women’s team. This allows him to grow in the sport and he considers that many of his achievements are thanks to the club, since training with the men gives him strength and encouragement and this is noticeable when he faces clubs at the international level.

Since she is not part of a women’s team in Santa Fe, since 2022, she has traveled to Rosario to play first for the Sportmen Unidos club and currently for the Club Náutico Sportivo de Avellaneda, which participates in the National League and International Tournaments.

The National League is played in a Grand Prix format, once a month (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) all against all, and Náutico is fourth.

Regarding his personal life, he combines sports where he goes to the pool and gym (he is also a lifeguard) and studies, since he is about to finish his degree in Industrial Design.

Being a goalkeeper was not her decision but rather the coaches, seeing her tall, suggested she go to goal. Today she loves being a goalkeeper and she dreams of playing in Europe and going to the Olympics.
