The Rumichaca international bridge became the epicenter of a massive protest by teachers belonging to the Nariño Teachers’ Union (SIMANA), who have blocked the border between Colombia and Ecuador in response to the call for a permanent national strike made by Fecode.

This action, which will affect thousands of students in public schools, is carried out to demand the elimination of the amendment to the Statutory Education Law that is currently being discussed in the Congress of the Republic.

The border blockade is anticipated to begin at 9:00 a.m. and extend until approximately 4:00 p.m. on June 12. The demonstration will have the participation of a large number of teachers, students and parents.

The strike, scheduled to last from June 12 to 20, will conclude with a large mobilization in Bogotá, where SIMANA teachers will join colleagues from across the country. The objective is to protest against the amendment, which, according to protesters, threatens to further make working conditions in the education sector precarious and deteriorate the quality of public education in Colombia.

Despite the suspension of the academic calendar during these eight days of strike, teachers have assured that these days will be recovered throughout the school year to avoid affecting students.
