Bolívar prepares to face seven critical points due to the overflow of the Cauca River

Following the announcement by the director of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management about the closure of the gap in Cara e’Gato, the governor of Bolívar, Yamil Arana, expressed his concern about other critical points in the department due to the overflowing of the river Cauca.

During his speech at the summit of governors of the National Federation of departments taking place in the city of Montería (Córdoba), he said that, although the news of the closure is positive, they have identified seven sectors that require strategic actions to mitigate the risk of new ruptures.

One of the most worrying points is the road that connects San Jacinto del Cauca with Achí, in Bolívar. In this sense, Arana stated that, despite the closure in Cara e’Gato, the river will seek to break through other places, so it is essential to take preventive measures in these vulnerable areas.

According to a consolidated report of damages, in Bolívar there are around 600 people affected by the floods. However, throughout the Mojana region, the impact is much greater, with 35,000 hectares of crops affected and more than 10,000 people affected.

The governor emphasized that this situation cannot be seen in isolation, but requires a regional analysis and solution, articulated between the different departments and municipalities.

To face this emergency, the department of Bolívar has three backhoe machines to strengthen the dikes and mitigate erosion. However, Arana recognized that these efforts are insufficient without coordination with the governorates of Córdoba and Sucre, which have joined the prevention and care efforts for the affected communities.
