This Friday the Bluradio portal revealed images that show a meeting between the brother of President Gustavo Petro, Juan Fernando Petro, who was a member of the Latin American Commission on Human Rights, and leaders of the Self-Defense Forces of the Sierra Nevada.
The photographs, obtained by Blu Radio, capture a meeting that took place in November 2022, just two months after the inauguration of Gustavo Petro as president of the Republic. In the pictures, Juan Fernando Petro is seen next to the lawyer Pedro Niño, who at that time worked at the Latin American Commission on Human Rights.
The conversation took place in a country setting, with representatives of the Sierra Nevada Self-Defense Forces wearing camouflage uniforms. According to Pedro Niño, the meeting arose as a result of an invitation from farmers and local communities. Although they were not initially scheduled to meet with the armed leaders, the discussion focused on the protection of the communities in that area of the country.
Niño affirmed that the representatives of the Self-Defense Forces sent a message to the president through Juan Fernando Petro, seeking a rapprochement with the Government. However, the lawyer clarified that His participation in this meeting was his last act within the Latin American Commission on Human Rights, from which he was expelled shortly after.
In response to the images, Juan Fernando Petro has not issued public comments.
The American Commission on Human Rights, a new organization led by Niño and other former members of the Latin American Commission, seeks to promote issues such as social forgiveness, political forgiveness and national reconciliation in territories affected by the conflict.
