Casanare Administrative Court declares annulment of the election of commissions due to gender discrimination

The Administrative Court of Casanare issued an unprecedented ruling in defense of women’s rights, declaring null and void the election of the permanent commissions of the Departmental Assembly of Casanare for the 2024 term.

The sentence was based on gender discrimination and symbolic violence exercised by a group of male deputies against the only two female deputies, Luz Mery Niño Chaparro and Marisela Duarte.

The Court found that the deputies Juan Fernando Mancipe Pérez, Wilder Andres Ávila Tibavija, Omar Hernando Ortega Molina, Eduardo Antolinez Pan, Luis Alejandro López Ríos and Heyder Alexander Silva García, tried to eliminate women from the permanent commissions, limit their right to vote and to be speakers of departmental ordinance projects, just for the fact of being women.

The sentence also highlighted the subtle, indirect and invisible violence that is exercised in the political sphere, where women are branded as incompetent and their physical appearances are valued more than their intellectual abilities.

The Court ordered that the Departmental Assembly publish the ruling on its website and that the Regional Ombudsman’s Office disseminate it to the community to raise awareness about women’s rights and prevent these sexist actions from occurring again.
