Taking into account the commitment that the mayor of Cali, Alejandro Eder, agreed to with the inhabitants of Comuna 18 (South of the city), the strategy ‘Let’s go back to my Cali Bella’ the weekend arrived (06/15/2024) to the hill The Morrowhere an intense and successful day of cleaning and beautification took place to protect this iconic urban forest.

In addition to its cultural, landscape and historical value, The Morro It is a tourist viewpoint and an environmental lung that contributes to erosion control and climate change mitigation; in addition to acting as a vital link with the tutelary hills of Las Tres Cruces and Cristo Rey and with the Farallones of Cali.

The day for the preservation of the hill was led by Alexander Camacho Erazo, secretary of Territorial Development and Citizen Participation; in the company of Martha Cecilia Cala Hernández, undersecretary of the Territories of Inclusion and opportunities (UNCLE).

The secretary highlighted the commitment of Mayor Eder and thanked the participation of other District Administration organizations, leaders of the sector and residents of the surrounding neighborhoods who were involved in the activity.

Taking care of the environment is everyone’s commitment

Last April and after extensive dialogue, the mayor of Cali agreed with the community to suspend the construction of housing in the Altos de Santa Elena project, whose development threatened the water wealth, fauna and flora of this ecosystem, located in the middle basin of the Meléndez River. In turn, the neighbors took responsibility for not littering, avoiding informal settlements and accepting the rules for the benefit of the collective interest.

However, the weekend day revealed a reality that involved the collection of two tons of debris and garbage. Faced with this, Secretary Alexander Camacho Erazo urged the community to comply more rigorously with the agreed commitments regarding the care of the environment.

“We need the citizens, we need the people, we cannot do it alone as an Administration solely and exclusively. To take care of the city we need everyone’s support, because it is together that we return to our beautiful Cali.”emphasized the head of Territorial Development and Citizen Participation.

Norberto Estrada, who participates in the process to defend the hill The Morro and the urban forests of Cali, stressed the importance of the tasks accomplished with a view to strengthening the sense of belonging to the place. “It is necessary to become aware of the effects and assume with firm commitment the protection and care of our environment”he expressed.

Looking ahead to the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity, COP 16which will take place in Santiago de Cali from October 21 to November 1, 2024the strategy ‘Let’s go back to my Cali Bella’ will increase actions to protect the environment, supporting the initiatives of a community that is responsible for the care and maintenance of public spaces and urban forests in the area. ‘Pacific Capital of Colombia’.
