The construction of a military installation in Tierra del Fuego generated a diplomatic claim by Chile, when it was discovered that part of the structure was three meters inside its territory. The situation originated with the installation of solar panels at the Hito 1 Maritime Traffic Surveillance and Control Post in Magallanes, donated by the company Mirgor.

On April 26, the Argentine Navy inaugurated improvements to the post, which included housing modules donated by Total Energies and solar panels from Mirgor. During the ceremony, Commodore Martí Garro highlighted that this initiative would improve the operation and sustainability of the post thanks to the collaboration between the State and private companies.

The Argentine ambassador in Chile, Jorge Faurie, explained that the installation of the panels was based on a fence that did not exactly coincide with the territorial limit, attributing the error to the lack of consultation of satellite coordinates by the operators.

Faurie minimized the incident, assuring that the panels will be removed as soon as the weather allows, and mentioned the possibility that these panels could also supply the Chilean side.

The Chilean Foreign Ministry asked for a prompt solution and confirmed that it received a note from Argentina acknowledging the error and offering to remove the panels. Chile’s Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Gloria de la Fuente, contacted her Argentine counterpart to emphasize the importance of resolving the matter quickly. Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren also downplayed the seriousness of the incident and expressed his hope that it would be resolved soon.

Both countries have agreed that their technical teams will evaluate the territory and climatic conditions to proceed with the removal of the solar panels and resolve the diplomatic situation.
