Vice President Francia Márquez fears for the safety of her family in northern Cauca

Vice President Márquez made a strong call to the Ministry of Defense to take measures for the security of the Valley, as well as Cauca, mentioning the municipality of Suárez and the La Toma district. Márquez is from that township and her family lives there.

Suárez is a municipality in northern Cauca, where FARC dissidents have a strong presence. There Márquez stood out by fighting against activities that motivated the unjustified dispossession of land, as well as rejecting the levels of poverty of the population of this area and the north of Cauca.

Vice President Márquez indicated that she fears for the safety of the community and her family in Suárez. “My heart hurts that just on this day, they attacked my father,” said Márquez, after the attack on the vehicle in which his father and his 6-year-old nephew were traveling with two escorts between the Timba (Cauca), passing through Timba (Valle) and the town of Robles, in Jamundí, on June 16.

“I inform that my father, along with my 6-year-old nephew and the two protection men, suffered an attack on the Suárez-Cali highway, near Timba, fortunately they emerged unharmed from the attack and are fine,” said the vice president. .

“I express my concern for the security in Cauca, Valle del Cauca, in the municipality of Suárez and the township of La Toma, as well as for the security of my community and my family,” he noted.

“I request the @FiscaliaCol open the relevant investigations to clarify these facts. To @mindefensa, take the necessary measures to strengthen the presence of the Military and Police Forces, which contribute to guaranteeing security in Cauca and Valle del Cauca,” said Márquez.

“In these difficult times I call on all of Colombia to join the efforts that are necessary to lead our society to peace. If we work in unity we can turn this page of pain and violence,” he said.

The attack against Márquez’s father occurred one day after the ‘Security Caravans’ strategy was launched in Jamundí with more than a hundred police officers and soldiers from the Special Forces and the Number 8 Infantry Battalion ‘Battle of Pichincha’. The authorities announced operations to guarantee the safety of the population.

The governor of Valle, Dilian Francisca Toro, said: I will continue to insist until I am tired, the security of the citizens in Valle del Cauca depends on a strategy led by the Government throughout the Pacific region. I repudiate the attack against Sigifredo Márquez, the father of Vice President Francia Márquez; He was traveling by land from Cauca, on his way to Valle del Cauca, when his caravan was attacked. Fortunately, his security scheme managed to evade the attack and reach Robles safely.”

In the Jamundí mayor’s office they indicated: “The competent authorities are present at the scene and are carrying out the corresponding investigations to clarify what happened. A special team from the National Police and the Attorney General’s Office has been arranged to carry out a thorough investigation.”
