The Navy installed solar panels in Tierra del Fuego, crossed the limit and generated controversy with Chile

The installation of some solar panels by the Navy in the Surveillance and Control Post located in Tierra del Fuego and known as Milestone 1generated a boundary controversy with Chilewhere parliamentary sectors demanded that the construction “be demolished” because it is located three meters inside the trans-Andean territory.

The Government of Chile sent a letter to the Argentine Foreign Ministry

The Government of Chile sent a letter to the Argentine Foreign Ministry warning that military installations located in the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and the South Atlantic Islands would violate its territorial integrity, since they would exceed 3 meters of the established border limits.

This is the “Hito 1 Maritime Traffic Surveillance and Control Post”, belonging to the Argentine Navy, which was set up thanks to donations from different private companies. The enclave is located in “Hito 1”, which separates both countries. .

Hito 1 (on the Argentine side) and Cabo del Espíritu Santo (on the Chilean side) are north of the Island of Tierra del Fuego, which is territorially divided between Chile and Argentina (more than 61% of the island belongs to Chile ).

The work was carried out on April 29, at the position that the Navy has located on the southern coast of the Strait of Magellan, in an area in which the maritime limit between both countries is set. The case even motivated a formal complaint by the Government of Gabriel Boric to the Casa Rosada.

The Argentine ambassador to Chile, Jorge Faurie, acknowledged that it was a mistake

In statements to Chilean radio stations, the Argentine ambassador in that country, Jorge Faurie, acknowledged that it was a mistake, that they were installed “without consulting what the coordinates of the limits were.

“Whoever installed the panels should have been guided by the satellite coordinates that demarcate boundaries. The issue is that moving them, at this time, would not be possible. “We would have to wait for the summer,” said Faurie.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren, who is touring Europe with President Gabriel Boric, tried to tone down the dispute.

“We have a very extensive border with Argentina and this is not an absolutely exceptional fact, sometimes these types of errors occur,” said Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren.

He added: “We believe that this is an error obviously made in good faith and as appropriate we duly made it known to the Argentine government through the appropriate channels.”

Meanwhile, Senator Pedro Araya (PPD), head of the Defense Commission, pointed out that even though it is a small incident, “the work should be demolished.”

“We believe that the Foreign Ministry acts correctly when demanding explanations of the case and without a doubt, what is appropriate is the demolition of this infrastructure, given that it is located in Chilean territory,” said the parliamentarian.
