A new project financed by the Chile – Mexico Cooperation Fund seeks to improve the safety of food produced by 20 women from the coastal area of ​​Tarapacá.

This initiative, promoted by the Chilean Agency for Food Quality and Safety (Achipia) and the Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and its institutions linked to fishing, will focus on implementing food safety standards to strengthen development economic and social of small producers that work with seafood.

The Minister of Agriculture of Tarapacá, Eduardo Justo, highlighted the importance of ensuring food quality and expressed the commitment to work multisectorally to support rural and coastal communities. The project also has the collaboration of the Chilean Agency for International Development Cooperation and the Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Agency of Jalisco, Mexico.

Among the beneficiaries are women from coves such as Chanavaya, Caramucho, Chanavayita, Los Verdes, Cáñamo, San Marcos, Riquelme, Cavancha and Pisagua. These producers will receive specialized training to improve food preparation and face the specific health challenges of the coastline.

Judith Seymour, representative of the “Beluá” enterprise in Chanavayita, valued the training opportunity that will allow them to raise their production standards and avoid risks for consumers. Carla Contreras, from “Scarlatta, Tierra y Mar” in Caleta Caramucho, also recognized the benefit of this training to face the complications of complying with health requirements on the coastal edge.

This project is part of a broader effort to promote a national food quality system in Chile, explained Manuel Miranda of Achipia, highlighting the importance of intersectoral collaboration to achieve these objectives.
