The president of Formentera Council, Llorenç Córdobahas expressed this Monday his willingness to negotiate to find a solution to the political crisis that the island is going through, although he has been categorical in stating that he will not accept the return of Jose Manuel Alcaraz.

Córdoba has described as “blackmail” the demand by Sa Unió, the government coalition, to rehabilitate Alcaraz under the threat of resigning en bloc. According to Córdoba, during the negotiations, Sa Unió representatives gave him an ultimatum to accept Alcaraz’s return, which he considers an unacceptable attitude.

Although Córdoba defends the coalition’s electoral program and its politicians, it suggests that the current situation could be influenced by business interests on the island.

Despite the tension, Córdoba has assured that he is willing to continue negotiations and hopes that some of the councilors will reconsider their resignation. However, he has made it clear that those “conflictive” councilors must leave the institution to allow the entry of other members of the Sa Unió electoral list.

The president has harshly criticized the resigning councilors for their attitude, accusing them of “hijacking” the institution and leaving officials without political direction. “They are putting pressure and have taken the Consell hostage,” lamented Córdoba, who has insisted that he will not give in to what he considers blackmail, according to the Ibiza Newspaper.

Furthermore, Córdoba has pointed out that, although the councilors can resign from their positions, they continue to maintain their minutes of elected positions, which allows them to continue in the institution without exercising their functions. This, according to the president, further complicates the situation, since they cannot be removed unless they themselves resign.

Highlights Mayans

On the other hand, Córdoba has highlighted the responsibility of the Minister of Tourism, Artal Mayans, who has not resigned and has continued with his duties, for which he publicly thanked. However, the president has admitted that he cannot govern alone with Mayans and is exploring all possible avenues to resolve the crisis, including contacts with the PSOE and Gent per Formentera.

Córdoba has emphasized the need to continue negotiating to find a solution that allows the Sa Unió coalition to maintain the Formentera Consell government and has asked all political actors involved to prioritize the stability and governability of the island.
